Itinerant badmen Leland (McHattie) and Billy (Bryk) drive on after a savage hit on a motel. In their comfortable home near the town of Millbrook, Indiana, Tom Stall (Mortensen), his wife Edie (Bello), teenage son Jack (Holmes), and young daughter Sarah (Hayes), begin a normal day. Short on cash and looking for thrills, Leland and Billy drift into Millbrook. They strike a diner at closing time, terrorizing the customers and demanding sex from the waitress, Charlotte (Drakeford). Diner owner Tom Stall finds himself a local hero after he successfully takes down the two armed thugs. Tom’s sudden celebrity draws unwanted attention from the outside world, and one day a scarred man, Carl Fogarty (Harris), walks into Tom’s diner, insisting that he knows Tom from the past, and that Tom’s real name is Joey Cusack. When Fogarty becomes abusive, Tom’s wife Edie, a lawyer, calls on Sheriff Sam Carney (Peter MacNeill), who tells Fogarty and his men to stay out of town. Sheriff Carney finds that Fogarty is a gangster with a history of violence. He finds no trace of Joey Cusack, but learns that Fogarty is associated with a Philadelphia crime syndicate boss named Richie Cusack. When Carney tells this to Tom and his wife, Tom emphatically denies knowing those men, or the Joey Cusack that Fogarty seems obsessed with. Some days later, Fogarty returns in his black Chrysler with his armed henchmen, and begins to stalk Tom and Edie. Edie loves her husband, but Fogarty’s menacing determination plants a seed of doubt in her mind. Tom must protect himself and his family from the immediate danger of what is either a case of mistaken identity, or a violent past that has finally caught up with him. To survive, Tom must use every skill and resource at his disposal. Music by Howard Shore. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by John Wagner and Vince Locke.
